What Is a Bio Peel?
A bio peel — also known as a chemical peel — is a professional skin treatment that uses a carefully selected blend of active acids to remove the outermost layers of the skin. This controlled exfoliation clears away dull, damaged, and uneven skin cells, revealing the fresher, healthier skin underneath.
The word "chemical" can sound off-putting, but these are ingredients derived from natural sources — fruit acids, milk acids, and naturally occurring compounds — that have been used safely in professional skincare for decades. At Kelaya, every bio peel is chosen and tailored specifically to your skin type and concern, so you're never receiving a treatment that's too strong or too mild for what your skin actually needs.
How Does a Bio Peel Work?
Your skin naturally sheds dead cells and renews itself approximately every 28 days. As we age, this process slows down — which is why skin can start to look dull, uneven, and congested over time.
The acids in a bio peel accelerate this process. They work by breaking down the bonds that hold dead skin cells together on the surface, allowing them to shed more quickly and completely. At the same time, they signal to the deeper layers of the skin to produce new, healthy cells more rapidly.
Depending on the type and strength of peel used, a bio peel can work at different depths:
Superficial peels target the very top layer of skin. These are gentle, require minimal downtime, and are ideal for brightening, smoothing, and refreshing the complexion.
Medium peels penetrate slightly deeper to address more significant concerns like acne scarring, deeper pigmentation, and more pronounced texture irregularities.
At Kelaya, we assess your skin carefully before recommending which depth and formulation is right for you.
What Skin Concerns Does a Bio Peel Treat?
Bio peels are particularly effective for concerns that live in the upper and mid layers of the skin. These include:
Hyperpigmentation and dark spots — Whether caused by sun exposure, hormonal changes, or post-acne marks, bio peels break down excess melanin in the skin and accelerate the fading of discolouration over a course of treatments.
Uneven skin tone and texture — By removing the uneven outer layer of skin, peels reveal a smoother, more consistent complexion underneath.
Acne and congested skin — Certain acids used in bio peels, particularly salicylic acid, are highly effective at clearing blocked pores, reducing active breakouts, and preventing new ones from forming.
Fine lines and early signs of ageing — The exfoliation and cell renewal process stimulates collagen production, which softens the appearance of fine lines and gives skin a firmer, more youthful quality over time.
Dull or lacklustre skin — Even a single superficial peel can dramatically brighten and refresh a tired-looking complexion by clearing away the build-up of dead skin cells sitting on the surface.
Post-acne scarring — Shallow acne scars and red or brown marks left behind by breakouts respond well to regular bio peel treatments as the skin is encouraged to renew itself more efficiently.
What Does a Bio Peel Feel Like?
During the treatment, most clients experience a mild tingling or warming sensation as the solution is applied to the skin. This is completely normal and indicates that the active ingredients are working. The sensation typically settles within a few minutes.
The treatment itself is quick — usually completed within 30–45 minutes — and is performed by a trained professional who monitors your skin throughout to ensure it's responding well.
What Happens After a Bio Peel?
This is where bio peels differ from something like a HydraFacial, which has zero downtime.
After a bio peel, your skin may look a little pink or feel slightly sensitive for 24–48 hours. Depending on the strength of the treatment, you may experience some light flaking or peeling over the following few days as the old skin sheds. This is a completely normal and expected part of the process — it means the treatment is working.
During this time, sun protection is essential, and we'll advise you on exactly how to care for your skin post-treatment to get the best possible results.
When Will You See Results?
Some clients notice an immediate brightening effect after their first session. However, the most significant results — particularly for pigmentation, scarring, and texture — build progressively over a course of treatments.
For most skin concerns, we recommend a course of 3 treatments spaced apart, followed by maintenance sessions every 2–4 weeks. Your skin gets measurably better with each session as the renewal process deepens and compounds.
Is a Bio Peel Right for You?
A bio peel is suitable for a wide range of skin types and concerns, but the right formulation matters enormously. What works beautifully for one skin type could be too strong or the wrong fit for another — which is why a proper skin consultation is always the starting point at Kelaya.
Bio peels are particularly well suited to anyone dealing with:
Stubborn pigmentation or sun damage
Uneven skin tone that skincare products haven't been able to correct
Congested, acne-prone skin
Dullness and a lack of radiance
Surface-level acne scarring or post-breakout marks
